85th Anniversary General Meeting of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) was organised at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa, during 16-18 December 2019.
With the coronavirus pandemic continuing its deadly run by infecting more than a million people and causing the death of more than 82,000 people across the world, the laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) intensified their efforts at combating the pandemic.
For his significant contributions, Dr Jagadeesan Loganathan, Scientist at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), (Regional Centre, Visakhapatnam) has been chosen by a peer-valued Advisory Committee for “CSIR Young Scientist Award” for the year 2020 in Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean & Planetary Sciences.
Dr Sarma VVSS, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), (Regional Centre, Visakhapatnam) has been selected for the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) National Award of Excellence in Ocean Science & Technology for the year 2020 for his significant contributions in understanding the Biogeochemistry of the Indian Ocean.
This award recognises her outstanding contributions in the field of aquatic microbial ecology, marine biofilms and their relevance in the oceans.
Dr Samir Damare, Principal Scientist and Head Analytical Services Division, CSIR-NIO, Goa, has been selected for the Senior Scientist Award for the year 2020 by the Microbiologists Society, India.
The main aim of this study is to identify and characterise the genes and proteins in the ocean to understand the cellular level operations of organisms in the ocean.

CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, and Keshava Deva Malaviya Institute of Petroleum Exploration (KDMIPE-ONGC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 5 January 2022 to develop a long term joint working partnership in areas relating to the structure and evolution of the continental margins of India and the adjacent deep ocean basins, leading to the development of a revised plate tectonic reconstruction model.

The MoU is the initiation of a programme for the development and deployment of artificial reefs along the Odisha coast to promote marine fisheries and biodiversity.
