85th Anniversary General Meeting of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) was organised at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa, during 16-18 December 2019.

With the coronavirus pandemic continuing its deadly run by infecting more than a million people and causing the death of more than 82,000 people across the world, the laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) intensified their efforts at combating the pandemic.

For his significant contributions, Dr Jagadeesan Loganathan, Scientist at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), (Regional Centre, Visakhapatnam) has been chosen by a peer-valued Advisory Committee for “CSIR Young Scientist Award” for the year 2020 in Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean & Planetary Sciences.

Dr Sarma VVSS, Senior Principal Scientist at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), (Regional Centre, Visakhapatnam) has been selected for the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) National Award of Excellence in Ocean Science & Technology for the year 2020 for his significant contributions in understanding the Biogeochemistry of the Indian Ocean.

This award recognises her outstanding contributions in the field of aquatic microbial ecology, marine biofilms and their relevance in the oceans.

Dr Samir Damare, Principal Scientist and Head Analytical Services Division, CSIR-NIO, Goa, has been selected for the Senior Scientist Award for the year 2020 by the Microbiologists Society, India.

The main aim of this study is to identify and characterise the genes and proteins in the ocean to understand the cellular level operations of organisms in the ocean.

The Workshop comprised theoretical and practical demonstrations on basic techniques for purification and characterization of marine natural products and understanding the potential of bioactive compounds from different marine resources as value-added products for various applications.

Mandovi and Zuari are the two main estuaries of Goa and have been exploited in recent years for various anthropogenic activities.

Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director, CSIR-NIO, said that underwater heritage in India is a new avenue that can generate huge interest among the public and maybe the future focal point of underwater heritage tourism.

Dr Rajiv Nigam is the first Indian citizen selected for this lifetime achievement award based on his outstanding research work on foraminifera (microfossil).

The Norwegian Consul General in Mumbai Mr Arne Jan Flolo visited CSIR-NIO (CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography), Goa, along with his business delegation on 26 October 2021.

The Governor mentioned that “Oceans are a treasure house of resources and with the increasing constraints on land the focus of research is growing on the Ocean Front.”

Dr Mazumdar has made a pioneering contribution to India’s gas hydrate exploration programme.

At the inaugural session Dr Maria-Judith Gonsalves, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NIO, welcomed the students and teachers and elaborated on the importance of skilling and upskilling. 

CSIR-NIO invited students and the public at large for its Open Day, to know more about the scientific endeavours in ocean research.

CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, and BITS Pilani, KK Birla, Goa signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 11 October 2022 to develop a long-term collaboration in the areas of education, training and research in the areas of biology, chemistry, marine instrumentation and high-performance computing.

Representatives from the Research Council of Norway, Ms Merethe Sandberg, Special Adviser, Ms Marianne Jensen, Head of Department and Ms Anicke Brandt-Kjeldsen, Head of Department, Mr Rahul Maheshwari, Advisor-Economic, Political and Public Affairs, Norway Consulate-General, Mumbai, visited CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa,  on 14 October 2022, to explore potential bilateral collaborations in ocean research.

Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, (CSIR-NIO), Goa, has been conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Indian Society of Applied Geochemists (ISAG), in recognition of his contributions to Earth Sciences in general and applied Geochemistry in particular.

Joining the ‘One Week One Lab’ campaign, the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa,organised a series of activitiesfrom 6-11 February 2023.

The MoU will establish a framework for activities in the area of Ocean Sciences.

Hon’ble CM of Goa delivers Foundation Day lecture, lauds CSIR-NIO for supporting Goa's initiatives in strengthening marine sector-oriented research.

Hon’ble Minister for Water Resources, Goa, Shri Subhash Shirodkar, stated that we must encourage wide and intense engagement of all stakeholders to achieve the needed actions for sustainable development and conservation.

The MoU is the initiation of a programme for the development and deployment of artificial reefs along the Odisha coast to promote marine fisheries and biodiversity.

CSIR-NIO, RC, Visakhapatnam, along with staff, students and volunteers, worked diligently to help preserve the beauty and cleanliness of Rama Krishna Beach. This initiative was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MOES), the Ocean Society of India, and Andhra University.

At GEOMAR, Ms Ansari will contribute to ongoing German projects funded by the German Science Foundation (GSF) and the European Research Council (ERC) in the areas of AI/ML.
