With the coronavirus pandemic continuing its deadly run by infecting more than a million people and causing the death of more than 82,000 people across the world, the laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) intensified their efforts at combating the pandemic.
Surveillance at the level of the virus, humans, and geographical origins and distributions is a critical step in combating Covid-19.
Ever since the Coronavirus pandemic broke out, CSIR has mounted a strategic, well-coordinated and integrated approach towards mitigating the Coronavirus outbreak.
Ten doctors and technicians from the ESI Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, were provided training in COVID 19 diagnosis.
Minister of Science and Technology, Health & Family Welfare and Earth Sciences, Dr Harsh Vardhan, on 9 January 2021 launched the Footwear Sizing System, Fashion Forecasting Card and CLRI Comfort Shoes for Women — TOESPRING at CSIR-CLRI (Central Leather Research Institute), Tamil Nadu.

Shri Nitin Gadkari launched the creation of an additional capacity of 1 million litres per day (MLD) plant of Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) & Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system at RANITEC from the Triple Helix Auditorium of CSIR-CLRI, Chennai.

On this occasion, students were made aware of National Technology Day and were provided information about the leather industry through technical presentations made by scientists at the centre.
On this occasion, Shri Karthikeyan, IFS, Assistant Inspector General of Forests, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Regional Office, Chennai, visited CSIR-CLRI and planted the saplings.
The demonstration reinforced the importance of continuous innovation and partnership in driving sustainability in the leather industry.
