CSIR-CSMCRI Celebrates 84th CSIR Foundation Day with Enthusiasm and Scientific Spirit

CSIR-Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSIR-CSMCRI), Bhavnagar, celebrated the 84th CSIR Foundation Day on 08 October 2025, with a blend of scientific outreach and academic inspiration. The day began with the institute opening its doors to school and college students, offering them a unique opportunity to explore ongoing research and development activities. Dr Bishwajit Ganguly, Chief Coordinator, said that students interacted with scientists and gained insights into the institute’s pioneering work in areas such as marine chemicals, desalination, and sustainable technologies. A significant number of NCC cadets also visited the institute and learned about the R&D activities of the institute. Dr Kanti Bhooshan Pandey, the Principal Scientist, reiterated the importance of such engagements in nurturing future innovators.

The afternoon session featured the CSIR Foundation Day Lecture by Prof. LS Shashidhara, Director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru, who spoke on the post-independent Indian science. This was followed by a Keynote Lecture delivered by Prof. S Ramakrishnan from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Prof. S Ramakrishnan discussed the boon and bane of plastic.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Kannan Srinivasan, Director of CSIR-CSMCRI, praised the dedication of the institute’s employees and called for CSIR to strive toward becoming a globally leading scientific institution. The event also saw the release of the institute’s Technology Compendium and Annual Report, showcasing its achievements and future directions. Mr Shri Biranchi Sarang, Controller of Administration, said that the celebrations reflected CSIR-CSMCRI’s commitment to scientific excellence, public engagement, and visionary leadership. Dr Parul Sahu anchored the event.
